The Search That Began on a Hill
From the time I was about thirteen or fourteen, I began to ask questions much bigger than I was. Why am I here? What is the purpose of my life? What is the purpose of anyone’s life? Those questions followed me everywhere.
When I wanted to think, I’d walk into the woods behind our home. There was a small hill that overlooked a spring. I’d sit there for hours, talking to God — though I didn’t yet know Him. I’d ask, Why did You make me? What is life all about?
That was the beginning of my lifelong search for truth.
Searching for Answers
As I grew older, that hunger for truth deepened. I picked up pamphlets, tracts, and books — anything that might explain life and purpose. But none of it satisfied. Everyone had opinions, but I wanted something solid. Something that didn’t change with culture or trend.
I didn’t realize it then, but I wasn’t looking for information — I was looking for a Person.
A Simple Booklet — A Life-Changing Message
When I was seventeen, I found a small booklet written by Billy Graham. It laid out three truths that changed my life:
- I was a sinner.
That explained the guilt and emptiness I carried. - Jesus Christ is God who became a man.
He lived a sinless life, died to pay the penalty of my sin, was buried, and rose again the third day. - I could be forgiven only by giving my life to Christ through faith.
Not by being good, baptized, or religious — but by grace alone through faith.
“For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God — not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9 JEN)
When I read that, something inside said, This is true. I believe it was the Holy Spirit showing me the truth.
But another thought came too — you’ll have to stop doing wrong things. I knew I would need to repent. I wasn’t ready. So I walked away.
Running — But Never Escaping
I graduated high school, restless and empty. Truth had come to my doorstep, but I hadn’t opened the door.
Soon after, I joined the Army. The routine filled my days, but when night came and silence fell, those same questions returned: Why am I here? What happens when I die? I couldn’t escape them.
The Turning Point
It was in Hawaii, at my permanent duty station, that everything changed. The same truths I had once read came flooding back. I realized truth wasn’t something to figure out with my mind — it was something to receive by faith.
So one night, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I confessed my sin and believed that He died for me, rose again, and offered me eternal life.
That was the day everything changed. I had found the truth I’d been searching for — and I’ve been pursuing it ever since.
The Birth of Desiring Truth
From that point forward, my heart has burned with one passion — to help others discover the same truth that set me free. That is why I began Desiring Truth.
In a world drowning in information yet starving for truth, people need something sure — something that doesn’t change when the world does. Desiring Truth exists to help you know truth, understand it, and live by it.
Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32 JEN) That verse isn’t just a motto — it’s the mission.

About Your Instructor
I’m Pastor-Teacher John Neyman, Th.D. For decades, I’ve taught the Bible, discipled believers, and counseled those struggling with assurance.
I developed the JEN translation of Scripture directly from the Greek and Hebrew texts, to help believers understand God’s Word with clarity. My passion is to help people not only hear truth but also live it.
